Final Cut Pro X - Motion 5 - m02

Oyibo has always had a very strong interest in photography. Must be influenced by his father. In 1985, Oyibo filmed with a Philips and Sony VHS camera and later with a Sony Video 8 while in Africa.

In the ninetees, Oyibo's fraternity (VSL Catena) decided to make a movie... De Symphonia Roesticana. This movie was shot on VHS and Video 8. It was edited "old school" with jog shuttles and music from cassettes. After seeing the result, Oyibo decided to re-edit "some day".

Then Oyibo went more to the side of photography until 2013. Then he got his first "Action Cam", a Garmin Virb Elite. Due to the strong Fish Eye effect and limited resolution the use of this camera was sporadic. Even in Africa, he used it not that much (sometimes to record the road trip from Benin City to Lagos).

In 2015, Oyibo did a road trip with his bike to the Alps and there he recorded most of the trip. When back home and in Africa, he edited that footage with Garmin Virb Edit and he had two hours of riding motorbikes. Nice for the participants but not for the rest of the world.
Because an issue with the file (call it Karma), Oyibo decided to re-edit the footage. Because iMovie is standard on Mac, he did his first edit with iMovie. And stopped after 10 minutes. It didn't work.

While looking for something "better", he was pointed out to Final Cut Pro X (first version) which was available as a full working trial version. The rest is history. Within the first J cut, Oyibo understood this was the way forward. He re-edited the road movie and added some of the first effects and transitions and after two weekends, the movie was done.

That was also the weekend that he flew back to Europe and in the plane, we came up with the idea to do his long overdue project... The Symphonia Roesticana. As soon as he unpacked his Mac, he purchased the FCPX license and the second point was to digitise the VHS tape. He bought a USB digitizer and on the second hand market, a Video 8 camera for the original tapes (one was missing so he had to use the original VHS master for the remaining footage. The only problem was to find a VHS player. And nobody in his family had one that worked. After numerous phonecalls he found one and he recorded the entire movie on his Mac. He also purchased his first app (Coremelt) for some effects. For those who have seen the movie, the wedding scene with the flashing eyes was the first effect done in the movie.

De Symphonia Roesticana

This was also the time that Oyibo purchased his license of Motion5. Although it took two years before Oyibo started to use Motion 5 intensively (he only made some Lower Thirds during the first period)
When the wonderful FCPX and Motion5 app, m02 was released, it opened a whole new (3D) world.

It is important to understand that there are two ways of interpreting a 3D image.

Both methods have a different approach. Especially the second option is a challenge. One of the great apps that allowed Oyibo to do his mapping was WebODM. This is an open source software pack (although not for free) where you add a number of images and render this to an OBJ textured image which can be viewed with software like MeshLab.

Further, one specific item where Oyibo likes to do his magic is with 360deg. camera(s).
FCPX fully supports equirectangular movie files. These files (photo's) can be seen as lot on Facebook. The famous panorama images. Very nice with a smartphone or tablet. Oyibo has made several movies with this camera during motorbike ride-out, car trips and mounted while skiing.
Oyibo, however used the 360 camera most as an additional camera with normal editing. With keyframes it is possible to have the camera change FOV without actually rotating or tilting the camera. Easy to do in post production.

While in Africa, Oyibo purchased his first 360 camera. Although the label stated 4K as the resolution, the photo quality was very poor. When back in Europe, Oyibo purchased a Garmin Virb 360. Although better than the Chinese camera, the quality as still not satisfying. After some years, Oyibo switched away from Garmin and purchased Insta360 One RS Twin Edition. And that works as a charm. This Insta360 is used for Ground Level imaging (video and photo), and the drones are for aerial 360 images. Although he also has a bracked to connect the Insta360 (or his GoPro's) to the DJI Inspire 2
